Drill cores shed light on high frequency sea level fluctuations, March 2011

The sedimentary record of windward margins of carbonate banks has the potential to record high-frequency sea level fluctuations that accompanied glaciations during the past million years. To establish a detailed sea level record for Great Bahama Bank, PhD student Kelly Jackson is mapping modern sediments and Pleistocene rocks and coring and dating Pleistocene sequences in the Exuma Cays. Cores were taken at Little and Big Darby Islands, and field work is ongoing to map surface geology. Research support was provided by the R/V Coral Reef.  Detailed maps of the Exuma Cays will be produced by combining satellite imagery with data from the cores and field mapping.
